MICF Update: Laraaji replaces William Basinski — joins Katina Bitsicas and Onishi-Beis Duo for July 29 concert
Due to health-related issues, William Basinski will not perform at the July 29th Dismal Niche / Mizzou Interational Composers Festival concert at Studio 4 at McKee Gymnasium. Celestial-ambient music pioneer Laraaji will now headline the 7:30 pm concert, which will also feature new media artist and Mizzou Assistant Professor Katina Bitsicas, and the Onishi-Beis Duo. The inaugural Mizzou International Composers Festival took place on the University of Missouri campus in July 2010, and over the next 12 years, MICF has presented premieres of new compositions by a host of Resident and Guest Composers. 2020 and 2022 Missouri Composers Project winners honored at March 22nd concert
The Columbia Civic Orchestra (CCO) and the Columbia Chamber Choir performed works by the winners of the 2022 Missouri Composers Project (MOCOP) in concert on Sunday evening, March 20th at First Baptist Church in Columbia. Since the 2020 and 2021 MOCOP concerts were canceled because of COVID protocols, the 2022 concert also featured performances of the winning compositions from the 2020 competition. Mizzou New Music Initiative seeks applications for Managing Director position
The University of Missouri School of Music seeks a director to manage all of the Mizzou New Music Initiative (MNMI) activities. The new Managing Director will fill the role held by Jacob Gotlib from six years from 2016 through early 2022, and current Managing Director Jason Thorpe Buchanan (interim). Managing Director duties include: • Working and communicating with external artists, • Coordinating MNMI community composition programs, • Arranging logistics for several on-campus programs, • Serving as the primary organizer for the annual Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF).

May 11 Sheldon Concert Hall Performance features world premiere of string quartet by Mizzou composer María Laura Disandro
On Wednesday, May 11 at 8 p.m., The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis will present the final “Sheldon Classics” performance of the 2021-22 season. Violinist and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster Erin Schreiber will lead a string quartet featuring fellow Symphony members violinist Shawn Weil, violist Leonid Plashinov-Johnson, and cellist Bjorn Ranheim. The Mizzou New Music Initiative will honor longtime St. Louis music journalist and musician Dean Minderman at a memorial concert on Sunday, May 3rd at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis. The concert will feature the Mizzou New Music Ensemble performing three Sound of Art commissions written by Mizzou composition students in honor of Minderman, as well as two additional works, one by a current Mizzou student and another by a Mizzou alum.
