FINAL REMINDER! The deadline for applications to attend the 2022 Missouri Summer Composition Institute is this Friday, May 6, 2022! Click HERE to access the online application page.

The Summer Composition Institute will once again be offered in person June 11-18 on the campus of the University of Missouri. The Summer Composition Institute offers an incredible opportunity for young Missouri composers to come together for one week of learning and interacting with other creative minds – and all accepted students will be able to participate FREE thanks to the generosity of the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation.

The institute is open to students entering grades 9-12 or preparing to enter their first year of college. Up to 16 composers will be selected to participate and write new works to be workshopped, performed, and recorded by an ensemble of professional musicians. Deadline for applications is Friday, May 6, 2022.

Accepted students will receive high-quality instruction and a face-to-face experience with our faculty, as well as presentations, workshops, and a performance/recording by renowned musicians of the [Switch~ Ensemble], who will bring their compositions to life. [Switch~] is a professional chamber ensemble performing at universities and festivals around the world.

Participants will receive composition lessons from MU faculty members Dr. Carolina Heredia, Dr. Stefan Freund, and Dr. Yoshiaki Onishi, and compose a piece to be premiered at the end of the week. Guest instructor Dr. Bonnie McLarty will be also be joining the teaching staff for the 2022 Summer Composition Institute.

During the week, students will participate in:

  • Daily Notation, Instrumentation, and Repertoire Courses
  • Daily Private Composition Lessons
  • Workshops with Members of a Professional Ensemble
  • Chamber Music Rehearsals
  • Performance and Recording by Professional Musicians

Students will also enjoy fun group activities each evening. Meals will be provided by the Mizzou Campus Dining Center, as well as housing for seven nights in University Housing provided by Residential Life.
