2022 COMP Festival showcases performances of award-winning compositions by Missouri students

The winning composers in the 2022 Creating Original Music Project (COMP) competition received awards and had their compositions performed at the COMP Festival on Saturday, April 23rd at the University of Missouri in Columbia. The event took place in Sheryl Crow Hall at the Sinquefield Music Center. The 2022 Junior Division COMP winners and honorable mentions with Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield and MU composition professors Dr. Carolina Heredia and Dr. Stefan Freund. The junior division concert, featuring works by the elementary and middle school winners of this year’s competition, was held from 11:30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.

May 11 Sheldon Concert Hall Performance features world premiere of string quartet by Mizzou composer María Laura Disandro

On Wednesday, May 11 at 8 p.m., The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis will present the final “Sheldon Classics” performance of the 2021-22 season. Violinist and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster Erin Schreiber will lead a string quartet featuring fellow Symphony members violinist Shawn Weil, violist Leonid Plashinov-Johnson, and cellist Bjorn Ranheim. Mizzou New Music Ensemble featured at Dean Minderman Memorial Concert May 3, 2022 at Sheldon Concert Hall

The Mizzou New Music Initiative will honor longtime St. Louis music journalist and musician Dean Minderman at a memorial concert on Sunday, May 3rd at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis. The concert will feature the Mizzou New Music Ensemble performing three Sound of Art commissions written by Mizzou composition students in honor of Minderman, as well as two additional works, one by a current Mizzou student and another by a Mizzou alum. May 6th application deadline for the 2022 Missouri Summer Composition Institute

The 2022 Missouri Summer Composition Institute will once again be offered in person June 11-18 on the campus of the University of Missouri. The Summer Composition Institute offers an incredible opportunity for young Missouri composers to come together for one week of learning and interacting with other creative minds – and all accepted students will be able to participate FREE thanks to the generosity of the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation. Composer Jennifer Jolley’s Mizzou residency scheduled for April 26-29, 2022

Jennifer Jolley, a member of the composition faculty at Texas Tech University’s School of Music, will be in Columbia as composer-in-residence at the University of Missouri School of Music from Tuesday, April 26 through Friday, April 29, 2022. Jennifer Jolley Jolley’s residency is led by Dr. Brian Silvey, Mizzou’s Director of Bands, and is funded by the Mizzou New Music Initiative (MNMI) and the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation. April 6th Sheldon Classics Concert to premiere composition by Mizzou School of Music student Emily Shaw

At 8 pm on Wednesday, April 6, the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis will present a Classics Concert featuring musicians of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) performing Felix Mendelssohn’sOctet, Richard Strauss’ Sonata for Violin and Piano, and The Sun Spins Out of Place to Warm You, a new work for violin and piano by Mizzou composition student Emily Shaw. Works by Missouri Composers Project winners to be performed by Columbia Civic Orchestra, Columbia Chamber Choir in Sunday, March 20 concert

The Columbia Civic Orchestra (CCO) and the Columbia Chamber Choir will perform the winning works from the 2020 and 2022 Missouri Composers Project (MOCOP) competition in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at First Baptist Church, 1112 East Broadway in Columbia. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.
