Mizzou New Music Summer Festival resident composers earn new honors

Several of the Mizzou New Music Summer Festival’s resident composers recently have received additional honors for their work. Clint Needham (pictured), who was one of the resident composers for the 2011 Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, was awarded the prestigious Barlow Prize for 2011. A total of 170 composers from around the world applied for this award, which carries a $12,000 commission to write a new work for woodwind quintet. Since the post here the other day about media coverage of the Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, several more articles have been published: Resident composer Steve Snowden was interviewed by the Columbia Daily Tribune‘s Aarik Danielsen for a post on the paper’s Art Axis blog, which you can read here. Mizzou New Music Summer Festival in the news

With anticipation building among composers, musicians, listeners and the media, the Mizzou New Music Summer Festival has been the subject of a number of news reports and features in recent days. Aarik Danielsen of the Columbia Daily Tribune previewed the festival with two stories in this past Sunday’s paper, and also interviewed guest composer Anna Clyne (pictured) for a post Monday on the Tribune’s Art Axis blog. The Sound of Art documents collaboration between composers, visual artists

The Mizzou New Music Initiative has released online three episodes of The Sound of Art, a series of short films documenting collaborative efforts between composers and visual artists. Now available for viewing on the Missouri New Music Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/moNEWmusic, the films cover the creation of three new compositions inspired by the summer 2010 exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and the premiere performances of those compositions at the Contemporary by the Mizzou New Music Ensemble. Tickets now on sale for 2011 Mizzou New Music Summer Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, which will be held Monday, July 11 through Saturday, July 16 in Columbia. The weeklong series of events will include four public concerts, with the grand finale featuring the world premieres of new works written by the festival’s eight resident composers and performed by the acclaimed new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound.
