The Mizzou New Music Initiative (MNMI) is set to welcome conductor Martín Fraile and composer and pianist Mauricio Charbonnier, who will be in residence from November 13-17.
Fraile is the Artistic Director of the Rio Negro Philharmonic and an avid curator of music festivals in the Rio Negro region of Argentina. He will serve as guest conductor of the Mizzou New Music Ensemble (NME), coaching rehearsals and conducting part of the concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 17 at the Sinquefield Music Center’s Sheryl Crow Hall.
Charbonnier is a composer from Argentina who has now written two works for the NME. His new piece, Acrópolis, will be conducted and premiered by Fraile during the November 17 concert.

The connection between Fraile, Charbonnier, and the MNMI dates back to 2023, when the pair hosted the NME in Buenos Aires and Bariloche, during its Argentinian tour.
Both guests will engage with students in rehearsals, private lessons, and Composition Seminar to share more about their musical ideas and careers. Additionally, Fraile programmed two other works that were arranged for the NME: Pequeña Plegaria by Colombian composer Paola Márquez, and Música Batutta by Chilean composer Andrián Pertout.
Additionally, the Missouri Music Teachers Association (MMTA) auditions and competition are being held at Mizzou this fall and their commissioned composer of the year is Venezuelan composer Víctor Márquez-Barrios, whose piece El Duende Lunero will also be performed during the November 17th concert. Another Latin American composer on the program is Peruvian composer Nilo Velarde, with his work El Ayla. Fraile, Charbonnier, Márquez, and Márquez-Barrios will all be in attendance at the concert.
Also on the program that night are Nina Shekhar’s ice ’n’ SPICE and LJ White’s Fountains and Cathedrals. Guest conductor Bill Kalinkos will conduct those pieces.
