The University of Missouri Wind Ensemble will present the world premiere of Dr. Stefan Freund’s SAS Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble at 7 p.m. Monday, November 17 at the Missouri Theatre. Freund is the Artistic Director of the Mizzou New Music Initiative and Music Director of the Columbia Civic Orchestra.
The piece will be performed by guest faculty soloist Leo Saguiguit and conducted by Dr. Brian A. Silvey. It was written by Freund in honor of Saguiguit’s 60th birthday.
The program will also include works by Dmitry Kabalevsky, Percy Grainger, Julie Giroux, and Alfred Reed. Kate Sellers and Neil Reed will also conduct.

Active as a performer, conductor, and producer of new music, Freund is the founding cellist of the new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound. He has performed at acclaimed venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Met Museum, Merkin Hall, Millennium Park, Disney Hall, the Barbican (UK), the Hermitage Theatre (RU), the Muzikgebouw (ND), the World Financial Center, Culture Station Seoul, and the Beijing Modern Music Festival. His cello playing can be heard on 20 released albums featuring Alarm Will Sound.
“It has been a great joy to work with longtime friends Leo Saguiguit and Brian Silvey on this piece,” said Freund. “It has also been wonderful to work with the students of the Mizzou Wind Ensemble to help this work come to life. I look forward to sharing this fun and celebratory piece with the audience on November 17.”
The Wind Ensemble incorporates the finest woodwind, brass and percussion performers on the University of Missouri campus. This select ensemble offers one-per-part playing in a flexible setting and performs the highest quality wind band literature.
The Missouri Theatre is located at 203 S. 9 th St. in Columbia. Admission to the concert is $5.
