Beyond this Point, a Chicago-based percussion ensemble, will present the concert “Musician Minus Instrument” that explores musical expression beyond instruments and expands what it means to be a musician and performer on October 25 at 7:30
p.m. at the University of Missouri School of Music’s Sinquefield Music Center.
Beyond This Point comprises percussionists John Corkill, Adam Rosenblatt, and Rebecca McDaniel, a former member of the Mizzou New Music Ensemble. They transform the live performance experience by presenting adventurous programs that synthesize musical
performance with other creative disciplines.

“Musician Minus Instrument” revolves around the idea of a “post-instrumental practice”– a concept that has been increasingly gaining traction in recent years, especially among percussionists. The program will include performances of works by Simon Løffler, Tonia Ko, Stefano D’Alessio, François Sarhan, Mark Applebaum, and Kaj Duncan David including the following:
- Imagination by François Sarhan
- Situation 15 by François Sarhan
- Longevity of lightbulbs (and how to make them last longer) by Stefano D’Alessio
- b by Simon Loffler
- Breath, Contained by Tonia Ko
Each work incorporates some combination of live electronics, light, and theatrical actions to expand the possibilities of live performance and artistic expression. The musicians’ “instruments” run the gamut from a loose jack cable to an IKEA desk lamp to their own bodies and voices.
The concert is free and open to the public.
