The Mizzou New Music Initiative (MNMI) will present nine concerts this winter and spring in Columbia that will showcase the program’s newest musical groups and composers along with internationally renowned artists.
MNMI is a diverse array of programs that position the University of Missouri School of Music as a leading center for the composition and performance of new music. The initiative is supported by the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation, led by Dr. Jeanne and Rex Sinquefield. Their vision is to create an incubator for the composition and performance of new music and to showcase Missouri as a center for the music of tomorrow.
The nine upcoming musical performances include the following:
Alarm Will Sound will present an evening of groundbreaking contemporary classical music including pieces by Brittany J. Green, Ana E. López-Reyes (Nnux), and Oscar Bettison on Tuesday, January 21 at 7:30 pm at the Sinquefield Music Center.
The University Philharmonic will perform Giovanni Porfirio’s Sinquefield Prize Premiere at the Chancellor’s Arts Showcase on Friday, February 21 at 7:30 pm at the Missouri Theater.
The Mizzou New Music Ensemble will perform works by Marco Alunno, Carolyn Chen, Christopher Dietz, Joan Tower, and others on Saturday, February 22 at 7:30 pm at Sheryl Crow Hall in the Sinquefield Music Center.
The Mizzou University Singers will perform the premiere of Mbuso Ldlovu’s Ingwe Emabalabala Egaile on Saturday, April 5 at 5:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.
Low Frequency Trio will perform a concert at 7:30 PM on Saturday, April 5 in Sheryl Crow Hall. The Mexican trio of bass clarinet, bass, and piano will be working with Mizzou students during a residency April 1-5.
The Columbia Civic Orchestra and Premiere Vocal Artists Orchestra will perform choral works by winners of the 2025 Missouri Composers Project (MOCOP) on Sunday, April 13 at 7:30 pm at Broadway Christian Church.
The 2025 Creating Original Music Project (COMP) Festival will showcase award-winning works by young composers on Saturday, April 19 at the Sinquefield Music Center.
The Mizzou Wind Ensemble will perform works by Viet Cuong at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 25 in the Missouri Theater, Viet Cuong will be in residence at Mizzou April 23-25.
The Mizzou New Music Ensemble will perform works of Viet Cuong and MICF Guest Composers Hilda Paredes and Judd Greenstein on April 27 at 7:30 pm at the Sinquefield Music Center.
Admission to all concerts is free.
