Maria Schneider

Columbia, MO – The “We Always Swing”® Jazz Series is thrilled to present the Maria Schneider Orchestra, 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024 at the Missouri Theatre. The concert is the only performance in Missouri and surrounding seven states, save a date in Elmhurst, Ill., near Chicago. “To present such an important and celebrated artist as Maria Schneider and see her lead the extraordinarily talented 18-piece ensemble perform her expansive, original compositions, is beyond special,” said Jon W. Poses, Jazz Series Executive & Artistic Director,

Tickets for Maria Schneider Orchestra are now on sale. The reserved-seat performance cost $30-$49 for the general public. Student tickets, sharply discounted, are $30 for the best seats and as inexpensive as $15 each. The Jazz Series offers discounted ticket packages, available exclusively through the organization’s box office, open 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Mon.-Friday, in person or by calling 573/449-3009. Single tickets are available through wealwaysswing.org.

Composer/arranger/bandleader Maria Schneider is a seven-time GRAMMY® Award winner, a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music (for her most recent album, 2020’s Data Lords), and a 2019 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Fellow.

Ms. Schneider will lead her 18-piece orchestra, many members of which have made previous Jazz Series appearances in other configurations, including saxophonists Steve Wilson and Scott Robinson; trumpeter Mike Rodriguez; pianist Gary Versace; and drummer Johnathan Blake.

Schneider is celebrating the 30th year of her career as a recording artist. This is her second Jazz Series appearance and the first in 16 years. “She’s certainly worth the wait!!” added an enthusiastic and genuinely excited Poses. “This is the kind of special performance and fearless presentation our mission calls for, and that we have produced since our 1995 inception.”

In addition to the concert, the Maria Schneider Orchestra will be in residence at the University Missouri School of Music on Monday, February 26. Schneider and members of the orchestra will read Mizzou student pieces, play alongside the Mizzou Concert Jazz Band, and offer master classes to Mizzou students.

Sponsors for the Jazz Series concert include the University of Missouri School of Music and New Music Initiative, Commerce Bank & Trust, Missouri Arts Council, City of Columbia’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau, Missouri Employers Mutual and from a generous individual, anonymous gift.
